FAQs

1Is there an age limit to volunteer?
Each fire department has their own age requirements/limits. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy. ND Labor laws prohibit anyone under the age of 16 to engage in active firefighting. NDFA doesn’t allow anyone under 18 to participate in high risk activities during NDFA sponsored regional/state schools.
2Do I have to quit my current job to volunteer?
Not at all. All departments understand that full-time jobs pay the bills.
3Do I have to move to the area I serve in?
Each department determines their response distance requirements. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy. Most departments will just be happy to have you volunteer.
4What qualifications do I need to become a volunteer?
Each department has their own membership requirements. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy.
5Do I have to be a resident of the state to volunteer? What if I’m a student?
Each department has their own membership requirements. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy. Most departments welcome transient personnel (i.e. military, students, etc.).
6What is the training process like?

For state certification, NDFA requires you pass a written test covering basic firefighting knowledge and a skills test covering the basic hands-on skills firefighters are expected to perform during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
7What if I have an injury?
Most fire departments are covered by Workforce Safety and Insurance (workman’s comp). Many other departments also offer supplemental insurance. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy.
8How much time is needed to dedicate to volunteering?
Each department has their own attendance/response requirements. We suggest asking your local fire department for their specific policy. Most departments have at least one meeting a month for business and training which may be required.
9Can I advance to a career firefighter from a volunteer?
Many career fire departments award additional hiring points for volunteer experience. It is a good place to begin your firefighting career and receive training.
